The 6 steps to achieving your goals.

Ah, I tell ya – there’s nothing better than getting up early and getting going! 

What a day – my cough is gone, my internet is back online and I’m feeling great! I’ve already got a bunch of work done and I’ll be at the gym when it opens at 8:00.

Also, I’m slightly buzzed by my 3rd cup of coffee and Metallica playing in the background.

Anyhoo, as promised, here are the 6 steps to achieving all your desires as outlined by Napoleon Hill in his book, “Think and Grow Rich.”

1) Fix in your mind the exact desire you want to achieve. It is not sufficient to merely say, “I want to be skinny” or “I want plenty of money.” Be definite as to what you want.

2) Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for what you desire.

3) Establish a definite date when you intend to possess what it is you desire.

4) Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.

5) Write out a clear, concise statement of what it is you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for achieving the desire and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to achieve it.

6) Read your written statement aloud, twice daily. Once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning. As you read – see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of what you desire.

If you’ve got a goal in mind, then it’s imperative you follow the above steps. Absolutely every goal and self-help book that’s been released since “Think and Grow Rich” promotes getting your goals through the above steps, although they may emphasize one step over another. 

For example, the book, “What to Say When You Talk to Your Self” by Shad Helmstetter emphasizes step 6 above all others. The Goals program by Brian Tracy emphasizes steps 1, 3, 4 and 5 in particular. And so on.

The thing is, when we have a goal we want to achieve, the above 6 steps are the best way to go about achieving that goal. First, we need to be specific about what it is we want – then, we must realize that in order to achieve our goal, we must make some sacrifices. I think many people don’t realize that the more frivolous things in your life that you can sacrifice, the quicker you will achieve your goal. Third step, creating a deadline, imposes internal pressure on us to get the goal done. It’s easy to say, “Oh, I want to lose 20 lbs.” But once you say, “I will lose 20lbs by January 1st”, well now that goal becomes a lot more real. Step 4, creating a plan, is probably the most crucial step towards achieving your goal, and the one that can be revisited the most often. Plans change, situations develop, we’ll always need to revisit our plans based on what steps we’ve been able to take and what obstacles we find in our path. Steps 5 and 6 are really a pair  – we need to write out our overarching strategy of goal, deadline, sacrifice and plan and then repeat and visualize this strategy over and over until it becomes a reality.

Wow – that’s a run on paragraph.

Anyhoo, aside from “Think and Grow Rich”, I’ve also been reading, “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. Because what goes unsaid with the steps above, is that in order to achieve our goals, we will need the help of many, many people. By reading Dale Carnegie, one learns how to deal and handle people to get the outcome you want. For most people, this will translate to sales. But for me, a classic introvert, this translates to less time dealing with people and more time spent in blissful solitude.

Now, when it comes to goals, I have divided my goals into 5 areas, I call these the 5 pillars. They are, in order of importance:

  1. Health
  2. Love
  3. Knowledge/Work
  4. Fortune
  5. Fame

If you can set goals for yourself in each of these areas, and then achieve all these goals, well then there’s no doubt you’ll be a smashing success.

The thing about the 5 pillars is that goals in one area will help your goals in another area. If you’ve got a health goal of looking and feeling your best, this will certainly help your Love goal, as people who are fit and healthy are more attractive. If you can achieve your knowledge/work goal and get a job doing what you love, this will ultimately help your fortune goal, as we tend to make more money when we enjoy our work.

If you’re serious about goals, then start by setting one goal for yourself using the 6 steps above. It’s pretty amazing how great your life will become simply by setting and achieving a goal.
