Rambles about stuff I like.

Mostly harmless 2: Mostlier harmlesslier

What’s this, gentle reader? A post on a Sunday?

Why are readers assumed to be gentle? Whenever I see the phrase, “… gentle reader,” in a book, I always picture a big, tough biker reading the book. Why gentle? Where the hell’s that come from? Why not fierce, or man-handed? Gentle, bleargh.

Anyhoo, it’s Sunday and I’ve got the house to myself so I’m gloriously high, just after noon.

When I’m high I generally love to do math. I love thinking about the intricacies involved with various math problems, especially when high.

Right now I’m working on the following problem: (pa x + dy)^2, where a and d are coprime to p, for some prime p; x and y are variables. If y is fixed, then as x runs through all residue classes modulo p, the first term within brackets are all congruent to 0 mod p. I need to either figure out a way to rewrite my statement so that …

Eh, y’know what – I think maybe writing about math is less exciting than me, a mathematician, thinking about it. So why don’t we just move on.

I’ve got my own youtube channel, called Gaming with Greg or something like that, where I do a bunch of “Let’s Play!”‘s – which involves me playing a video game and talking during the action. It’s a challenge to be talking while playing, especially while trying to be entertaining, so I find it fun. My buddy Apple watches ’em and he enjoys ’em, so that’s cool too.

Anyhoo, I just finished my Orcs Must Die! 2 series last night. If you haven’t played Orcs Must Die! or Orcs Must Die! 2, I think you should. They’re awesome! It’s all cartoony graphics, and it’s a 3rd person shooter tower defense game. It’s righteous!

But at first when I started my OMD2 series, I was still of the mindset that OMD was better. I loved OMD, I must’ve played and replayed it 10 times before OMD2 came out. Then OMD2 was released – and since it wasn’t exactly like OMD, I didn’t really like it. But after having done my Let’s Play! series, I’ve gotta say that OMD2 is maybe the better game.

The graphics are notably better than OMD1. Like, a lot better. Plus OMD2 has a ton more enemies and weapons. In fact, all the weapons that are for offer in the spellbook don’t even show up in the main game!

What I mean is, in original OMD, after you won a level you got a new trap. And at the end of the game, you had collected all the traps. But in OMD2, although you win a new trap after you pass a level, at the end of the game, you still haven’t collected all the traps! Madness!

What’s more, OMD2 has the 2 characters – there’s the War Mage and the Sorceress, each of which have unique weapons! The replayability is just like… guuuueeeeeaaaauggghh!

That previous sentence should be read in the voice of Randy Marsh.

So yeah, lovin’ OMD2. Since it’s Sunday, I’ll probably play a bunch more this afternoon.

No football on this aft – but Superbowl next Sunday! Oh man, I don’t really know if I’m going for the Seahawks or the Broncos. On the one hand, Peyton Manning, but on the other hand, Seattle’s defense. CRAP this is going to be a good game!

Or not, it could be a blowout or a snoozefest. We’ll see – that’s why they play the game!

A ramble about cold and sports journalism and stuff

Oooh baby is it ever cold out there today! Glorious! It’s a brisk 12 degrees Celcius outside, which is hovering right around an ideal day for me. What’s funny is that although it appears cold out now, come sMarch [sic] or April and any 12 degree day then is going to feel downright balmy. It’s all about context here in the 2nd coldest capital in the world.

You know what I hate but can’t get enough of? Sports journalism. Generally, there’s very little to talk of in the world of sports outside of the actual game results. Case in point, the headline on the NFL.COM page right now, which reads: The Redskins are 0-2 and RGIII has struggled. Is it time to make a change in the nation’s capitol?

Oh man, talk about a made up media story. There’s been two weeks in the NFL, and so far the Skins have played the Eagles (where they lost by 6 pts) and the Packers (who kicked the shit outta them because the Packers lost week 1 to the 49ers.) That’s not a lot of data one can extrapolate from.

But the NFL is a cutthroat league – and if you’re not winning at the moment, there’s going to be a TREMENDOUS amount of pressure put on you to start winning. Especially if you’re in a football crazy town like Washington.

Aside: That’s Washington DC we’re talking about. Is it a crazy football town? I know they’ve got the Hoggies Superfans… but do they have anything else? I thought that town was politics crazy. Maybe there’s a politics/football connection I don’t know about.

Anyhoo, yesterday also featured the 3rd and final Manning Bowl, which is where Peyton Manning’s team plays Eli Manning’s team. I thought the Giants might win, but Peyton and the Broncos kicked the everloving shit out of the Giants. So that Peyton is 3-0 in all the Manning Bowls. (Now the only way there could be a Manning bowl is if the two teams meet in the playoffs.)

How’s this for a scenario: Peyton takes the Broncos to the Superbowl this year and wins. So then both Eli & Peyton would have 2 Superbowl rings. Then next year, both the Giants and Broncos make it to the finals for an all-Manning-Superbowl to determine FOR REALS which brother is the better quarterback once and for all. I tell you, any network sponsor looking at that scenario would absolutely plotz. PLOTZ, I say!

Sadly, the mighty Minnesota Vikings lost the game with less than 20 seconds to go, when the stupid Bears who were trailing by 6 scored a late, last-minute touchdown. AP only had a measly 100 rushing yards – never gonna break 2500yds like that, AP.

Honestly though, AP is the greatest RB in the game today. Bar none. If the Vikes didn’t have AP they wouldn’t have anyone! (Quick, name another good player on the Vikings… See? It’s impossible.) It’s the AP show over there and we need to get some talent over there if we’re going to get him his deserved ring.

Ramble about school and Preston Manning’s TD’s

Oooh, look at that sexy new sub heading. I figured it was time to change it. There’s a couple reasons. 1) There’s no way to give me money through this site. 2) People shouldn’t be giving me money for 15 minutes of “off-the-top-of-my-head” brain scratchings. (Well, *I* certainly think they should, but realistically, no one’s going to.)

So there we have it – new subheading, referencing the fact that I write on my blog for 15 minutes every day. (Mostly everyday, I skip some here and there…But as we can see from the archives I’ve been pretty consistent for July and August.)

Anyhoo, it’s Friday – another long work week over, time to relax and stuff. Of course, that’s most people – me, I’m a grad student. So I don’t exactly have a work week until school starts. And school officially starts on Monday – but not for me, I think school doesn’t start until the 3rd week of September, because I’ve only got TA duties this semester.

Oh man, let me tell you about how awesome this semester is going to be! I’ve got 2 classes to TA; two 3rd year classes about basic group theory. Should be easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy-nice-n-breezy-Japaneesy-Little Jeezy.

But the best part is that I’ve got two one-hour tutorials, each scheduled on Thursday! So that technically, I’ve got a hectic ONE DAY WORK WEEK!! Muah ha ha ha – eat it office slobs!

Now, I wont exactly be spending the rest of my time watching tv and smoking weed. (Just most of it.) I do have a little thing called a PhD thesis to write, plus a special exam due in November. So I do have lots of work to do. And I am continuing with the Get Up Early Initiative… so I can’t really rub it in everyone’s faces about how I can sleep in until 10:00.

But I do always have the option to sleep in until 10:00 every morning, so I got that going for me.

Anyhoo, didja catch the football game last night? 7 Goddamn touchdowns for Preston Manning. (NB: We refer to Peyton Manning as Preston Manning because we’re Canadian and silly… so that’s the way it is.) The guy I’m playing in my schlub league started Preston and amassed a whopping 60+ points. That’s friggin UNHEARD OF!!!!

I’ve gotta say that the early favorites for Super Bowl champs are indeed The Denver Broncos. I bet John Elway almost plotzed last night when Preston scored his 7th TD. I’m loving the sports chatter this morning too – it’s all about how, “Peyton is just getting warmed up!” or “We haven’t seen the best of Peyton Manning!”

Yeah, yeah we have. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that last night’s game was the best game that Preston will ever play. (Best in a score-wise/passing yards sense.) I doubt he’ll ever eclipse the 7-TD/445yd mark ever again.

Man I can’t wait for Sunday!
